Deacon Claybourne has been Rayna Jaymes's lead guitarist in her band for more than 20 years. He has played a big part in Rayna's life.  

 

Deacon has suffered badly after having a drinking addiction for a long time, however he has been sober for thirteen years, until he found out he was Maddie's biological father at the end of season one. He then relapsed and started drinking again, but only for a short period of time before getting sober again. In season four Deacon married his long time love Rayna Jaymes.

In season five we see Deacon being very much a family orientated husband, looking after Maddie (Lennon Stella) and Daphne (Maisy Stella) while Rayna goes away to promote Highway 65.
